Sprint and endurance are extremes of the duration-intensity of effort spectrum. The sprint (< 30 s) operates fundamentally on anaerobic pathways (phosphagens and glycolysis); resistance (>5 min) depends on oxidative phosphorylation. The mechanics of maximal sprinting involve high horizontal propulsive forces, high leg stiffness, and very short contact times (~80100 ms at maximum speed). Maximum sprint power is achieved at ~58 m/s. The limit running speed is determined by the horizontal force applied to the ground and the time available for it. In endurance, lactate threshold speed (vLT) and running economy determine performance. The Péronnet-Thibault model describes the power-duration curve integrating the three energy pathways. The acceleration in the acceleration phase of the sprint follows an exponential speed-time model.
