Running includes an aerial phase where neither foot contacts the ground. The CM follows a spring-mass model (SMM) trajectory: the leg acts as a linear spring that accumulates and releases elastic energy during contact. The leg stiffness k_leg (= F_max/l_max) determines the contact time and the vertical oscillation of the CM. At ~3 m/s, elastic recovery provides ~50% of the energy per stride (mainly in Achilles tendons and femur). Optimal stride frequency minimizes metabolic cost. The vertical GRF has a single peak (~23 times body weight) at midstance. The running cost depends on the work to redirect the CM at each change of support (collision work) and the work to recover the dissipated energy. Maximum aerobic speed (vVOmax) is the global performance parameter that integrates VOmax, lactate threshold and running economy.
