When a structure is overloaded, deformation transitions from elastic behavior to plastic behavior. This results in permanent deformations that involve rearrangement of atoms in such a way that, upon reducing the load, they do not return to their original positions, resulting in permanent deformation. If deformation continues, fractures can initiate and propagate, potentially leading to complete failure.
