Stability
Storyboard
The key in describing the behavior of the ecosystem is the possibility of detecting in advance if it is going to become unstable.
In this sense, it is important to define when the system is unstable and what situations exist. In particular, it is important to recognize whether the instability is recoverable or ultimately leads to a new situation from which there is no turning back.

Description
The instability of an ecosystem can be defined depending on whether the behavioral equations imply that at least one of the species becomes extinct in the future.
Within this scheme can be defined the concepts of:
- local instability when the condition only occurs in specific locations
- global instability when not restricted to a particular location
Note that local instability is recoverable in the sense that the species may migrate from uncontained locations to extinction.
Additionally, it should be considered that environmental parameters vary over time, so instability can be
- punctual when it is only limited to a limited period of time
- generalized when it does not depend on time
Finally, a catastrophic instability can be defined when it is global and generalized.
