Sports jumps (length, height, triple jump, volleyball, basketball) integrate mode M4 (jump) with elements E1 (muscle), E2 (tendon: stretch-shortening cycle), E4 (joints: knee-hip-ankle) and E6 (CM: flight path). Vertical jump performance depends almost exclusively on the vertical velocity of the CM at takeoff (v_vert), which in turn depends on the net momentum generated during the contact phase. The stretch-shortening cycle (CEA) with countermovement (CMJ) increases the jump height by 1020% compared to the static jump (SJ), mainly due to the restitution of elastic energy of the patellar tendon and the Achilles tendon, plus reflex potentiation. In the long jump, the optimal take-off angle (~2025°) is less than the theoretical 45° because the athlete arrives with a high CM and with high horizontal speed. Landing requires eccentric work of the knee and ankle extensors to absorb the kinetic energy of falling (up to 1,000 J) and protect the joints.
