Kinematic analysis describes the geometry of movement (positions, velocities, accelerations and angles) without considering the causing forces. It is the basis of all biomechanical diagnosis. 3D motion capture systems (infrared cameras with reflective markers, inertial IMU systems) record the position of markers in space at 100500 Hz. Numerical differentiation of positions provides velocities and accelerations, although it introduces noise that must be filtered out (low-pass Butterworth filter, typically 610 Hz for human movements; 2550 Hz for impacts). The joint angles are calculated from the segmental vectors. The kinematics of the inverse kinematic chain (IK) allow joint positions to be estimated from external markers. Measured variables: 3D positions of markers. Determined values: joint angles, angular velocities, linear and angular accelerations, step lengths, frequencies, CM trajectories.
