Repetitive overuse injury occurs when the load accumulated on a tissue in a given period exceeds its capacity for repair and adaptation. Unlike acute injuries (exceeding the limit in a single event), overuse injuries result from the progressive accumulation of microscopic damage. Dye's load-capacity model describes the balance between the applied load and tissue tolerance: when the accumulated load exceeds the zone of homeostasis, a zone of overload is entered, leading to injury. Internal load in runners can be estimated as the product of the impact force and the number of steps (>10,000 steps per typical workout). The Wöhler fatigue curve applied to biological tissue defines the relationship between stress amplitude and number of cycles to failure. Excessive increase in training load (>10% weekly) is the most documented risk factor for overuse injuries.
