Contact with the ground (or with the implement) is the only moment in which the athlete can modify his quantity of movement through external forces. In racing, optimal contact minimizes collision losses and maximizes horizontal propulsion. The contact point of the foot with respect to the CM (horizontal offset) determines whether a braking torque (heel impact) or minimum braking torque (midfoot/forefoot impact) is generated. The angle of the ground reaction force (GRF) with respect to the vertical in the propulsive phase determines the orientation of the propulsion. Optimal contact time depends on speed: the higher the speed, the less available contact time, which requires greater leg stiffness and greater RFD. In jump, the drive contact must produce the maximum net vertical impulse in the minimum time available. In ball hitting, the point of impact on the surface of the ball determines the direction, spin and exit speed.
