ASD is modeled from a characteristic alteration of the cortical connectivity pattern: short-range hyperconnectivity together with long-range hypoconnectivity, both quantified as extensions of the connectivity matrix W used in E8. The ratio between both types of connectivity defines a segregation-integration index of the network. At the cellular level, a relative excess of excitation over inhibition (along the same lines as A1 and A7) combines with atypically reduced synaptic pruning during development (direct extension of E14 pruning dynamics), leaving a higher than expected synaptic density in adulthood. Clinically, this is associated with sensory hyperreactivity (increased gain in response to stimuli) and with greater intra-individual variability in the neural response to repeated stimuli.
