Mechanical interventions modify forces, occlusal contacts, or dental and mandibular positions to restore biomechanical balance to the masticatory system. They include: occlusal adjustment (selective reduction of premature contacts by controlled wear to balance load distribution), orthodontics (application of controlled forces to move teeth), occlusal splinting (acrylic device that distributes and reduces loads during bruxism), and orthognathic surgery (surgical repositioning of the jaws to correct severe skeletal discrepancies). In orthodontics, the system of brackets and arches applied generates forces and moments on the teeth that activate alveolar bone remodeling. The optimal orthodontic force is 50300 g (0.53 N). Orthognathic surgery requires cephalometric planning: surgical movement is calculated as the difference between the current position and the target position of the cephalometric points. The occlusal splint reduces stress on the teeth and TMJ by increasing the distribution area and cushioning impacts.
