Transport diagnosis evaluates the flows of substances through oral tissues: dentin permeability (fundamental in dental sensitivity and adhesive effectiveness), salivary flow (marker of risk of caries, xerostomia and general protection), oral clearance of substrates and drugs, and diffusion of mineral ions in the enamel. Dentin permeability is measured with the Pashley chamber: a known hydrostatic pressure is applied to a dentin disc and the fluid flow through it is measured, calculating the hydraulic permeability coefficient (Lp). Salivary flow is measured by sialometry: the patient collects saliva for 515 min at rest (unstimulated flow) or by chewing a piece of paraffin (stimulated flow). Oral sucrose clearance is measured by recording the concentration of glucose in saliva at time intervals after rinsing with a sugar solution. Fluoride diffusion in enamel is studied with electron microanalysis (EPMA). Measured variables: fluid flow through dentin, salivary flow, substrate concentration vs. time. Determined values: Dentin Lp, salivary flow, clearance time.
