Biological interventions act on the biological balance of the oral system: they modify the microbiota, the immune response or tissue regeneration processes. The main ones are: antibiotic therapy (amoxicillin/metronidazole in aggressive periodontitis), probiotic therapy (Lactobacillus reuteri, L. salivarius to compete with S. mutans and periodontal pathogens), photodynamic therapy (laser light + photosensitizer that generates bactericidal singlet oxygen), anti-inflammatory biological agents (IL-1 inhibitors, RANKL antagonists such as denosumab to stop resorption periodontal bone), and guided bone regeneration (barrier membranes with or without bone grafts to regenerate lost alveolar bone). The kinetics of bacterial elimination by antibiotics follow first- or second-order models depending on whether they are concentration-dependent (quinolones, metronidazole) or time-dependent (penicillins). Photodynamic therapy follows the Bunsen-Roscoe law: the bactericidal effect is proportional to the product of irradiance times exposure time (light dose).
