D1 Electroencephalography (EEG)
Title
The EEG records on the scalp the electric field generated by the synchronous activity of large populations of cortical neurons, mainly the summed postsynaptic potentials in cortical columns (direct extension of the synaptic integration of E6), propagated to the electrode through a volume conduction model. The recorded signal can be decomposed into the frequency domain by its power spectral density, quantifying the activity in the classical bands (delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma). The inverse source localization problem attempts to reconstruct the distribution of cortical activity that best explains the voltage pattern recorded on the scalp, typically using regularized minimization methods. The coherence between channels quantifies the functional coupling between regions (direct extension of the spectral coherence of E9), and the automatic detection of epileptiform discharges takes up the amplitude and duration criteria introduced in the epilepsy model (A1).
