A4 Multiple sclerosis (demyelination)

Title

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that attacks the myelin sheath of the axons of the central nervous system, directly altering the conduction parameters defined in the cable model of E03 and in the myelination curve of E14. Fluctuating immune activity generates episodes of active demyelination alternating with partial remyelination, producing the characteristic clinical pattern of flares and remissions. The loss of myelin reduces the speed of Saltatory conduction and increases the effective capacitance of the axonal membrane, decreasing the safety factor of propagation (defined in E03); When this factor falls below unity, conduction blockage occurs. Axonal damage accumulated over time translates into progressive clinical disability, approximated here using an EDSS-type scale.
