Title
Tumor growth is described with Gompertz kinetics, a characteristic of cell populations that self-limit when approaching a maximum volume sustainable by the tissue. The increase in tumor volume, together with peritumoral edema generated by fluid extravasation through a damaged blood-brain barrier, increases intracranial pressure following the same Monro-Kellie relationship introduced in the TBI model (A06). The increase in intracranial pressure compresses the surrounding vasculature, reducing local blood flow (end extension of E11) and displacing brain structures (midline shift), in addition to interrupting the effective functional connectivity of adjacent cortical networks (extension of W of E08/A11). When intracranial pressure exceeds a critical value, the risk of herniation is established, the most serious acute complication of this pathology.
