M7 Systemic neuroinflammation

Title

Systemic neuroinflammation describes the sustained activation of microglia, the resident immune cell of the central nervous system, in response to signals of damage (extension of the immune formalism used in A04). Activated microglia release proinflammatory cytokines that increase the permeability of the blood-brain barrier (along the same lines as the A14 model), induce illness behavior (reduction in motivation and exploratory behavior) and impair synaptic plasticity (extension of the eta parameter of E07, in direct parallel with the mechanism described in A08 for depression). When neuroinflammation is chronic and sustained, it can induce progressive neurodegeneration (N extension of E14); Under normal conditions, however, the system tends to resolve inflammation and return to a basal cytokine state.
