M2 Brain death (clinical criteria)
Title
Brain death is defined as the irreversible and complete cessation of brain function, including the brainstem, and is formally distinguished from deep coma (M01) by the total and permanent absence of activity, not just its reduction. The model formalizes the usual clinical criteria: sustained absence of activation (Arousal=0), cessation of cerebral blood flow (end extension of E11) associated with a cerebral perfusion pressure that collapses below a critical value, absence of brainstem reflexes upon maximum stimulation, positive result of the apnea test (absence of respiratory response despite progressive hypercapnia) and an isoelectric electroencephalographic recording (electrical silence). brain, anticipating the EEG model of series D). The simultaneous and sustained combination of these criteria constitutes the operational definition of brain death.
