D7 Ornithological Radar
Title
D7 describes radar as an instrument for remote observation of birds in flight, capable of operating at night, in fog and at distances of up to 200 km. It is the only method that simultaneously provides position, speed and density of entire flocks without the need to capture or equip individuals. There are two relevant operating modes for the simulator: surveillance radar (measures position and Doppler velocity of individual or group echoes, calculating migratory flow and altitude) and micro-Doppler analysis of wing beat (the time signature of the reflected signal varies with f_beat and v_tip, allowing species and flight mode to be identified at a distance). D7 is the core diagnostic method for A6 (altitudinal distribution under extreme conditions) and A10 (detection and quantification of large-scale formation disruptions). The radar ranging equation connects instrument parameters to its detection capability for a given species.
