D1 Field Morphometry

Title

D1 describes the set of morphometric measurements that are carried out on a bird in the hand - captured, ringed or in rehabilitation - to characterize its wing system as a physical object. It is not a remote observation method but the standard biometrics protocol that feeds all the input parameters of modules E and A: without b, S and m it is not possible to calculate AR, wing loading, Reynolds number, or the P(V) curve. The model includes the equations that connect the gross measurements (bent wing length, weight on scale) with the derived aerodynamic variables, and defines condition indices that allow detecting anomalies of A1 (overweight) and A3 (wing asymmetry due to fracture). It is the gateway to the simulator: every individual must be characterized by D1 before applying any other D or A module.
