A4 Muscle Atrophy or Damage

A4 models the loss of flight capacity derived from the degradation of the pectoralis muscle, which in actively beating birds represents 1525% of the total mass and is the primary driver of flight. The causes can be very diversecapture myopathy (stress myopathy syndrome), viral or bacterial infections that affect muscle tissue, deconditioning due to prolonged captivity, or simply protein catabolism in the advanced phase of migration (A7)but the physical effect converges at the same point: reduction of P_max and f_batido_max. The model translates this loss of muscle capacity into a top-truncated P(V) curve: there is a ceiling of available power below which the bird can fly, but only in a restricted speed range. If P_max_pat is less than P_min of the required curve, sustained flight is impossible. The Strouhal number calculated with the pathological values allows us to evaluate whether the residual beat maintains some propulsive efficiency.
