Chemical pollution disturbs the balances of the soil interface (E5), chemical exchange (E9) and the leaf-atmosphere interface (E6). Soil contaminants (heavy metals, salinity, herbicides) alter the absorption of water and nutrients. Airborne pollutants (O, SO, NOx, fine particles) enter through the stomata and cause direct oxidative damage to chloroplasts and membranes. The model describes the flow of the contaminant to the damage site and the detoxification responses.
