Wind resistance and mechanical damage

Mechanical wind damage occurs when the drag force (E7) generates bending stresses in the stem or branches that exceed the strength of the woody material (E4). Damage can be reversible (recoverable elastic deflection), threshold (trunk fracture: snap) or cumulative (material fatigue from repeated wind loads). The plant responds adaptively by reducing its frontal area (aerodynamic reconfiguration), increasing the basal diameter (thigmomorphogenesis) and producing higher density wood. Root overturning (uprooting) is the alternative to fracturing when the soil is saturated.
