It models competition between plants for shared resources (light, water, nutrients, space) as a physical process of differential uptake. The plant that most efficiently captures the limiting resource excludes its competitors (R* principle). Coexistence mechanisms require niche differentiation (capture of different resources in space, time or form), which reduces competitive overlap.
