It models the kinetics of plant growth: cell elongation controlled by turgor pressure and wall extensibility (Lockhart equation), cell division in meristems (sensitive to temperature and carbon), and secondary xylem growth (which produces growth rings). Integrated temperature (degree-days, GDD) predicts phenological stage more accurately than calendar time.
