Ground interface

Storyboard

It models the exchange zone between the root and the soil: water absorption (matric potential), nutrient uptake (diffusion and mass flow in the soil solution), and the biogeochemistry of the rhizosphere (exudates, mycorrhizae, local pH). The most important characteristic of soil for the plant is its hydraulic conductivity, which drops non-linearly as it dries, creating a bottleneck in water supply long before the soil is dry in absolute terms.
