It models the energy balance of the leaf: absorption of solar and thermal radiation, and dissipation by convection (H), transpiration (E) and infrared reemission. The resulting leaf temperature determines the rate of all photosynthetic enzymatic reactions, stomatal aperture, and vulnerability to thermal damage. The model connects the physics of heat with photosynthetic biochemistry and the physiology of heat and frost stress.
