Electromyography (EMG) records the electrical activity of the muscle as the sum of the action potentials of the active motor units. Surface electrodes (sEMG) capture the signal from superficial muscles at 10002000 Hz. Standard processing includes: full-wave rectification, band-pass filtering (20500 Hz for sEMG), and smoothing (sliding RMS or envelope filter). Normalization with respect to maximum voluntary contraction (MVC%) allows comparison between subjects and muscles. The onset (beginning of muscle activation) determines the anticipation time before impact. Co-activation quantifies the simultaneous activation of agonists and antagonists. The sEMG-force relationship is approximately linear in isometric muscles but varies with speed and length. Measured variables: raw EMG signal in µV. Determined values: activation level (MVC%), onset, duration of activation, co-activation, temporal pattern of muscle activation.
