Center of Mass Analysis

The CM analysis studies the trajectory, speed, acceleration and mechanical energy of the center of mass of the athlete as a system. The CM can be calculated from the kinematics of the segments (mass-weighted sum) or by integrating the GRF divided by the mass (force platform method, more accurate during contact). The mechanical power of the CM (Cavagna method) discriminates the changes in kinetic and potential energy and the external work done. The vertical oscillation of the CM indicates the efficiency of the locomotor mode: small oscillations imply less gravitational work. The trajectory of the CM in flight (projectile) allows verifying energy conservation and estimating jump heights with only the data from the force platform. Measured variables: GRF(t) and initial position of the CM (or segmental markers). Determined values: CM trajectory, vertical speed at takeoff, jump height, external and internal mechanical work, percentage of energy recovery.
