Title

The efficiency diagnosis quantifies the relationship between the useful mechanical energy produced and the metabolic energy consumed. Gross efficiency (_gross) includes basal metabolism in the denominator; the net efficiency (_net) excludes it. The cost of transportation (COT) normalizes energy expenditure by distance traveled and body mass: it is the most used metric to compare the economy of movement between individuals and sports modalities. VO is measured by indirect calorimetry (ergospirometer): O consumption and CO production are converted into energy expenditure through the energy equivalent of oxygen (E_O 20.9 kJ/L O, variable with the respiratory quotient RQ). Running economy (RE) is VO at constant submaximal speed. Bicycle mechanical efficiency (_bike 97%) and swimming propulsive efficiency (_swim 310%) are sport-specific values.
