Neuromuscular control failures involve errors in the planning, execution or correction of sports movement. The nervous system does not generate the correct sequence of muscle activations, the synchronization between agonists and antagonists fails, or proprioceptive feedback cannot correct the trajectory in time. The electromechanical reaction time (EMD) limits the speed of response: if an unexpected impact occurs in < 3040 ms, the neuromuscular system cannot activate the stabilizing muscles before the injury occurs (non-contact ACL injury mechanism). Post-injury loss of proprioception reduces the afferent signal, impairing joint position feedback. The time-delayed PD control model describes oscillations and joint instability in injured extremities. Compensatory movement strategies generate suboptimal biomechanical patterns that overload other structures, creating chains of secondary injuries.
