Elastic failures affect the ability of tendons and elastic muscle components to store and restore mechanical energy. Tendinosis (chronic collagen degeneration) reduces Young's modulus E_T and stiffness k_tend, increasing deformation under the same load and reducing the rate of force transmission. Partial rupture reduces the A_T cross section, decreasing the maximum tolerable force and increasing the risk of complete rupture. Tendinitis produces pain that activates a reflex inhibition that reduces the activation and therefore the load on the tendon. In the degenerated tendon, hysteresis increases (more losses per cycle) and the recovery coefficient _rec falls from the normal ~92% to values of 7585%. Reducing k_tend tendon stiffness alters the natural frequency of the spring-mass system, decoupling the stretch-shortening cycle from the optimal rhythm of locomotion. The pain threshold on cyclic loading of the tendon determines the tolerable training level during rehabilitation.
