O4 Intersegmental Coordination

Title

Intersegmental coordination describes the temporal and spatial pattern of activation and movement of body segments to maximize performance. The principle of proximal-distal transfer establishes that power is generated first in the proximal segments (large, slow) and is transferred to the distal segments (small, fast), forming a kinetic chain that amplifies distal speed. The bullwhip effect results from the deceleration of the proximal segment that transfers its angular momentum to the distal one. Each joint contributes power at the optimal time: if activation is premature or late, power is dissipated or not accumulated correctly. Putnam's (1993) model quantifies intersegmental energy transfer using coupling power terms. Perfect synchronization (timing) of joint power peaks differentiates the elite athlete from the amateur. Neural control adjusts timing with millisecond precision through long-term motor learning.
