O1 Power Maximization
Title
Mechanical power is the product of force and speed and represents the rate of performance of useful work. In sport, maximizing power output is the main objective in explosive disciplines (sprinting, jumping, throwing, weightlifting). Hill's force-velocity relationship states that maximal muscle power is achieved around 3035% of maximal shortening velocity V_max and 3035% of maximal isometric force F_0; Outside that zone, the power drops. Maximizing the power of the entire musculoskeletal system requires the simultaneous activation of the correct proximal-distal sequence, the use of the stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) to add elastic energy, and the temporal coincidence (timing) of the peak power of each joint. Training with optimal loads (load-velocity profiling) identifies the load that maximizes the individual power of each athlete. Total mechanical power is the sum of the joint powers of all active joints.
