Title
Changes of direction (COD) involve decelerating the CM in the initial direction, redirecting it, and accelerating in the new direction. The friction force available between the shoe and the surface limits the lateral force and therefore the speed of change. The friction cone defines the maximum direction of force that can be exerted before sliding. Energy is partially dissipated in deceleration and must be regenerated in reacceleration, making CODs metabolically costly. The inclination of the CM (lean) during the turn is the strategy to balance the centrifugal force with friction and gravity. The higher the entry speed and the smaller the turning radius, the greater the centripetal force required and the greater the risk of ACL injury from the lateral force on the knee. The COD time depends on the turning angle: a 180° turn requires greater deceleration and reacceleration than a 45° turn.
