The Other Physics

In Chile we always talk about physics students having two options; an academic or pedagogical career. However, in the developed world there is a third option that is also much better paid than the first two. Over time, this third path has already found opportunities in Chile, outside of countries that give visas to emigrate for people who have studied careers such as physics.

The talk explains the type of work they do in this other physics that is associated with the industry, but that is much broader than just product design. However, it focuses more on what is work for theoretical physicists, and there are also many opportunities within experimental physics that could be discussed in another presentation. The areas in which they participate are explained, especially how systems and processes are modeled, ranging from topics in traditional physics to economic and sociological topics. Additionally, it shows how the results of the work are applied and how today it includes participating in the implementation in simulators and / or neural networks in artificial intelligence systems.

What is presented includes examples of how a physicist / mathematician, who was very relevant in string theory in physics, today ranks 36th among the richest people in the world. It also explains how today people's behavior has been modeled and affected, including achieving the exit of England from the European Community and the election of a figure as problematic as Trump. Finally, the entire process for the case of Covid19 is shown, explaining theoretical modeling, numerical techniques, and the use of artificial intelligence systems. The example also shows how the models not only seek to replicate and forecast reality, they are also a technique to give guidelines on how to act during the pandemic or detect failures when the rulers do not take stockings in a timely manner.
